Made from an old book, with a small cut out filled with a bird created using paper clay I made from the pages of old books. The book was destined for landfill – I hope it doesn’t mind having a new life.

“Great spotted woodpeckers are made of magnets. Trees, as we know, are made of metal. Or at least have a strong metal core. That’s how they stand up. Great spotted woodpeckers like to swoop dramatically through woodland until they fly too close to a tree and suddenly and inelegantly stick to the side of it. When you hear them drumming in the spring, they are ‘asking’ the tree, full of new sap and magnetism, to release them. Life is quite challenging for a great spotted woodpecker.
Great spotted woodpeckers have a reputation for stealing the young of other birds. They do this because, much as they would like to, they are not allowed to eat their own. Young great spotted woodpeckers are terrifying and would eat their parents if they weren’t held fast to the inside of a tree by their magnets. Red of head and huge of beak they are fierce, stupid and tyrannical. If young great spotted woodpeckers weren’t stuck firmly to the inside of their nests until they had had some rules drummed into them, there would be no life left on this planet. Once big enough to leave the nest, the young are taken by their parents to your peanut feeder and abandoned.
Great spotted woodpeckers are constantly being harassed and surprised by trees and their young and are frequently quite tired. No wonder they want your peanut feeder to themselves, it’s the least challenging thing they encounter all day.”
