A lot of lies about herons, from the ‘Lies About Birds’ series (scroll down to read the text). Illustrated with a poor photograph of a paper bird I have made out of old RSPB magazines.
A4 print, mounted (and put in a cellophane bag to prevent escapes).
(Please note that, regretfully, I don’t send work outside of the UK)

“The loosely tied bundle of sticks and grey feathers standing around at the side of the stream you’ve just driven past is a grey heron. They are about three feet tall but have an elasticated neck so they might appear to be about 30 feet tall if you surprise them, or if you are a fish. Herons are rock stars. They look the way they do thanks to late nights, deafening performances and wild partying during the mating season. They are tuneless and loud and they know it. They call each other ‘Frank,’ short for Frank Sinatra. It’s ironic. Outside of the mating season they take the well-worn path from rock stardom to fishing. Quietly. In flight they tuck in their necks (to protect their vocal cords) but leave their legs dangling because it goes with the ‘I partied so hard I forgot my legs’ image. Like all rock stars they like being photographed. Find a nice lake with a bit of autumn mist and they’ll queue up, showing their good side. Whatever that is.”
